At last night’s City Council Meeting, the Ferndale Fire Department awarded Ava Hansen a Certificate of Appreciation. On Thursday, July 2, 2026, Ava and her grandfather were out riding their bikes when Ava spotted a small fire on a porch. She stayed calm and told her grandfather, “We need to do something.” Together, they called 911 and kept an eye on the situation. After the incident was resolved, Ava told her grandfather her dream was to become a firefighter.

The certificate reads, “By remaining composed under pressure and assisting members of the Ferndale Fire Department, Ava demonstrated remarkable maturity and a strong commitment to the safety of others. Ava’s actions reflect the highest values of community service and fire safety. The Ferndale Fire Department and the community are deeply grateful for Ava’s bravery and helpful conduct.”
