A Message from Mayor Raylon Leaks-May

Ferndale City Council stands with West Bloomfield, Michigan, and the Jewish community after the horrific event that occurred at Temple Israel on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

I am grateful to know that our neighbors are safe, thanks to the heroic efforts of Temple Director of Security Danny Phillips and the many local public safety officers who swiftly secured the situation. I specifically want to thank the Ferndale Police Department for their response to this matter.

My thoughts are with many people. I am thinking of the children, who should never be exposed to an act of violence. I am thinking of the parents and guardians, who should never have to fear sending their children to school. I am thinking of the teachers, who should never have to risk their lives to save their students. And I am thinking of the Jewish community, who should never have to face acts of terror and Antisemitism.

On March 8, 2021, the City of Ferndale passed an Adoption of a Resolution of Support for Confronting and Combating Antisemitism in Our Communities as Part of Mayors United Against Antisemitism:

“This statement declares unequivocally that Antisemitism is incompatible with the values of society, calling to condemn Antisemitism in all forms, support efforts directed at eradicating Antisemitism, rejecting the opinions and justification of Antisemitic acts, recognizing the need for vigilant efforts to prevent and report Antisemitism, and affirm a climate of mutual understanding and respect.”

Ferndale City Council values our Jewish community members and extends our support during this difficult time.
