Boards and Commissions

Ferndale is a city filled with great creativity, talent, and ingenuity. When these attributes come together, incredible things can happen.

Join a Board or Commission

Boards and commissions provide opportunities for citizens of a wide variety of talents and backgrounds—residents, business owners, entrepreneurs, and beyond—to work together and make our community a stronger, more vibrant place. Have ideas for strengthening our city? Want to get involved in planning, development, and decision-making? We would love for you to consider joining us. Review our boards and commissions' bylaws here.

Applications for boards and commissions are considered on a quarterly basis. Applications are accepted for two months, then the Mayor vets the applicants by holding one-on-one interviews before making her recommendation for appointment at an upcoming Council meeting. Applicants can expect to find out the status of their application within a few months of their submittal.

Although not a requirement, potential applicants are encouraged to attend at least one meeting for the board/commission they are interested in. This can occur before or after submitting an application.

Minutes & Agendas

Agendas and minutes for the Board of Zoning Appeals, Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, and Planning Commission can be found at the Agendas & Minutes Portal.

Discourse with Dignity Policy

Whether you’re attending a meeting of City Council, or a board or commission, first and foremost we are glad to have you here. We value public engagement above all else, and we welcome your respectful participation.

To ensure that Ferndale public bodies’ meetings run smoothly and effectively and that every person has the chance to be recognized and heard, the City follows Ferndale City Council’s Rules of Procedure and Robert’s Rules of Order, most recent version, as amended. The City has also prepared our Discourse with Dignity: Guidelines for Public Bodies Meeting Participation to help you understand how and when to participate effectively.

If you have questions about the application process, please reach out to the City Clerk's Office at 248-336-4366 Ext. 107 or email dlent@ferndalemi.gov.
