YMCA Providing Free Grab and Go Meals for Children and Young Adults

March 23, 2020

Editors note - This story has been updated as of 3/30/20 to reflect a new schedule of pickup times: Monday and Friday from 3:45-4:15 p.m.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education, has launched a temporary program supporting local community efforts to provide healthy meals to school-age youth up to age 18 and young adults with special needs up to age 26.

Healthy, pre-packaged meals will be available at the Kulick Community Center (1201 Livernois Ave.) from 3:45-4:15 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays.

A few notes about this program:

  • The honor system is in place; children do not have to be present for parents to pick up meals.
  • Parents/children can take up to four days worth of meals.
  • All meals will be grab and go.
  • Meals will be served directly from the delivery truck so families do not need to enter facilities.
  • The meals being distributed come from two sources: Unique Food Management located in Pontiac, Michigan, and YMCA Healthy Living Kitchen housed at Peaches and Greens in Detroit, Michigan. Both sites adhere to all health department guidelines and all the food distributed meets and exceeds nutritional requirements as prescribed by the USDA.

The program is being offered on a week-by-week basis; please check back for updates before travelling to pick up food. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact the YMCA.
