Steps To Prevent Spontaneous Combustion

July 6, 2019

According to the Ferndale Fire Department, two of the most recent fires that have taken place in Ferndale have been due to spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion occurs when a flammable or combustible substance is slowly heated to its ignition point through oxidation. A substance will begin to release heat as it oxidizes. If this heat has no way to escape, like in a dryer or pile, the temperature will raise to a level high enough to ignite.

There are several steps that can be taken to prevent spontaneous combustion from happening, and the Ferndale Fire Departments asks that you read the steps below to keep you, your house, and local businesses safe!

If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Ferndale Fire Department at 248-546-2510.
