People for Bikes has released their annual “Places for Bikes” rankings and the City of Ferndale has been ranked one of the top 30 communities in the country. This ranking is determined by gathering feedback from everyday bike riders, city staffers, open-source maps, and publicly available data. It scores five key factors: Ridership, Safety, Network, Acceleration, and Reach.
City staff worked with People for Bikes over the past year to raise Ferndale’s overall score from 2.2 to 3.0. Recent projects that installed protected bike lanes to provide a more comfortable ridership experiences for all ages and abilities, such as Livernois and Pinecrest, contributed to the increase in score from last year.
Some other Michigan communities ranked include Ann Arbor (3.0), Detroit (1.6), Marquette (2.9), Traverse City (2.1), Kalamazoo (1.9),Lansing (1.8), Alma (1.6), Warren (1.5), Flint (1.5), Grand Rapids (1.5), and Sterling Heights (1.5).
