New Art Installations at The dot

February 1, 2021

The City of Ferndale and the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority have been thrilled to celebrate the completion of The dot. As part of the completion of this important project, the City and the Ferndale DDA teamed up with Studio Incognita, a Ferndale-based design firm, to create an artistic installation that would enliven the first floor windows while tenants are recruited to the space. This installation is intended to honor existing Downtown businesses and residents who made the project possible, while also highlighting the City's vision for future tenants in the space, as driven by community input.

The installation goes beyond the typical minimal, temporary signage that often goes into new or vacant storefront spaces to advertise their availability. Together, with Studio Incognita and additional input from the Ferndale Accessibility and Inclusion Advisory Commission, four scenes were created to showcase the types of local, independent businesses the Downtown aims to recruit—businesses that provide new amenities and experiences for our residents and entrepreneurs alike, who will attract additional daytime traffic to our Downtown.

These images depict scenes within an art supply store, a bakery, a medical office, and an athletic wear store. The goal was to highlight businesses that would enhance the diversity of the Downtown mix, while simultaneously complement what is currently here. While it isn't guaranteed what the new businesses will be, the Development Agreement and City aim to secure small, independent businesses like those shown in these scenes.

Equally important, the images also showcase the way the Ferndale community sees the world—inclusively and enthusiastically embracing diversity. Diversity is normal in Ferndale. Everyone is welcome in the shared experience of living, working, and having fun in the community no matter your race, gender expression, cultural heritage, sexual orientation, or ability. In the coming weeks and months, despite the uncertainty that COVID-19 brings to our economy, Ferndale is excited to celebrate this commitment to a diverse, inclusive community. We aim to recruit local businesses to The dot that will share this commitment while strengthening and enlivening our Downtown district.
