Firewood by the Bundle and Face Cord: Now Available at DPW

August 27, 2020

Heading camping for the weekend? Have a wood-burning fireplace or furnace in your home? Next time you’re in need of a fuel source, look no further than the City of Ferndale’s Department of Public Works.

DPW is happy to announce that they will now offer seasoned firewood for sale at a deeply discounted rate. Wood is available for $10 a bundle or $60 a face cord.

DPW Director Carlos Kennedy has been working to bring the firewood program to fruition for nearly two years, after seeing an opportunity to provide a reduced-cost product to residents and deliver a sustainable disposal option for the excess wood the Department collects.

“We’re really excited to be able to be able to offer this to our community,” Kennedy said. “It’s a product that many people need, and a resource that we have plenty of, so it just makes sense.”

How does it work? Anytime DPW responds to trim, remove, or clean a fallen tree off the road or other public land, the tree is taken back to one of the City’s storage yards. Leaves and clippings (including from the annual curbside leaf collection service) are mulched and made available for residents during the spring and summer months, while tree wood has historically needed to be chipped or disposed of. Now, what doesn’t become wood chips is being split and seasoned for firewood, available for easy purchase at the DPW Office.

According to Ferndale Sustainability Planner Erin Quetell, the firewood program is a great example of environmental sustainability by the City. "It allows us to reuse urban wood from tree maintenance services while providing a resource for our community members and reducing the amount of material that would otherwise be discarded," Quetell said.

With firewood selling for an average of $80 to $135 a face cord in our area, DPW's rate "is a bargain, any way you look at it," Kennedy said. “We recoup the cost of cutting and seasoning, and residents save money on a resource they need anyway. It’s a win-win.”

Firewood can be purchased directly at the DPW public office, located at 521 E. Cambourne: Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m., and Friday 7:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The office accepts cash and credit via Square. (Please purchase the wood directly from the DPW office and not from City Hall.)
