On Thursday, June 20, residents may notice some increased activity at 8 Mile Rd. and Woodward Ave. as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) performs a cleanup of intersection’s underpass and pedestrian areas.
The Cities of Ferndale and Detroit will be assisting with the cleanup, scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday. Signage was posted at the intersection 24 hours ahead of time, to give people the opportunity to collect or move their belongings; items unclaimed or abandoned on Thursday morning will be disposed of. Peoples’ personal belongings will not be taken from them and there will be no attempt to relocate people themselves; this is purely a cleanup effort.
Staff will assist in Thursday’s cleanup as part of the City of Ferndale’s ongoing partnership with SOS/Lighthouse and the Community Housing Network. The organizations have been working for over a year to provide resources and, whenever possible, housing to area homeless individuals. SOS/Lighthouse sends social workers to the intersection weekly to offer help/resources and work to arrange more-permanent housing options for those in need. The Cities of Ferndale and Detroit have also been performing regular cleanups at the intersection.
