The Fire Department provides full-service fire rescue and EMS services to the City of Ferndale, and services to the adjoining communities of Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak Township. The Fire Chief responds to incidents and provides management for large or complex incidents. The Fire Chief is recommended by the City Manager, confirmed by council, and reports directly to the City Manager.  The department has a staff of 24 firefighters, 1 Fire Marshal, 1 Administrative Assistant and 4 part-time inspectors, with an annual budget of approximately $4.5 million.  The Department is a member of the OAKWAY mutual aid group and works collaboratively with its neighboring departments.

Recognizing the national shortage of firefighters, Ferndale places a strong emphasis on training from within and innovative recruiting.  The City is seeking a Chief who places a high priority on personal and individualized development of staff and succession planning.  The Department recently completed an internal assessment.  The next Chief will have the opportunity to plan and implement the recommendations provided.  This position is part of the senior leadership team of Ferndale.  The City commits to invest in the development of its executive leaders and is interested in candidates who will dedicate a minimum of three years to the position.

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated a record of leadership and a commitment to proactive, hands-on, participative management and will possess excellent interpersonal, problem solving and financial management skills.  The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills and will intentionally engage with the diverse constituencies of the City.  The Fire Chief must be adept at developing positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders and will embrace the collaborative and inclusive culture of the community.

Candidates are required to have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Fire, Public or Business Administration or a related field.
  • Ten years of progressively increasing leadership experience.  Five years of experience as a chief officer is preferred, but not required.  National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer and Chief Fire Officer Accreditation preferred.  
  • A valid Michigan driver’s license or obtain one within 30 days of appointment.
  • Must currently have and maintain the following certifications, or the highest level of certification required to maintain the certification series: Fire Officer I certification; Michigan or National Registry EMT-Basic; NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 (within 60 days of appointment).
