The Ferndale Police Department protects the rights of all persons within its jurisdiction to be free from criminal attack, to be secure in their possessions, and to live in peace. The Ferndale Police Department serves the people of the city by performing the law enforcement function in a professional and courteous manner, and it is to these people that we are ultimately responsible.

Ferndale Police Chief Timothy D. Collins has worked for the Ferndale Police Department since 1977. Chief Collins was hired in 1977 as a Police Cadet and was promoted to the rank of Police Officer in 1979. Chief Collins has worked in many of the positions offered by the department over the past three decades. He was assigned to the Oakland County Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) in 1985 and was reassigned to that unit in 1987 through 1988 and again in 1990. Chief Collins was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1991 and to the rank of Lieutenant in 1994. Chief Collins was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1999 and held that rank until his appointment to Chief of Police in June of 2010.

Chief Collins is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy in 1998.

Chief Collins is Married to Katrina who works as a Dental Hygenist in Berkley Michigan. They have three sons, Sean (currently a student at Michigan State University), Connor (currently a student at Ferndale High School) and Daniel (currently a student at Ferndale Middle School).

Aside from his duties at the Ferndale Police Department, Chief Collins and Katrina are both active in the Ferndale Public School Community.
